The supply of cocoa around the world is controlled by a number of companies, but sadly, these companies can survive on limited accountability. Therefore the reality behind our boxes of chocolate, cups of hot chocolate and chocolate bars, lives a never ending cycle of poverty, child slavery and unsafe working conditions. Some of these children do not have access to education and are made to work in hazardous conditions.
The next time you go to buy a chocolate treat, please consider the child enslaved in unsafe working conditions so you can enjoy a 5 minute sugar fix. There are MANY fair trade options available in your local supermarket, just look for the Fairtrade symbol!
By watching Swap your Choc you can meet some of the cocoa farmers from Ghana and see how fair trade benefits their lives. Making an informed decision goes along way in helping the farmers and their families to live a life we hope for our own children.
